Understanding Speech Delay
Speech delay means a child is acquiring speech along the normal sequence but noticeably later than peers. Roughly one in five two-year-olds is a late talker, and while some catch up, there is no reliable way to predict which ones — so assessment is always the safer choice.
Therapy is intensive, playful and parent-mediated, and most children make visible gains within eight to twelve weeks.
Signs to look for
- No babbling by 12 months
- Fewer than 10 words at 18 months
- No two-word phrases at 24 months
- Speech unclear to family at age three
- Relies on gestures and crying to communicate
- Frustration when not understood
