Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Building the everyday skills of childhood — play, self-care and school participation.

Suitable for ages 6 months – 16 years

Overview

Pediatric occupational therapy helps children take part in the 'occupations' of childhood: playing, dressing, eating, writing, learning and making friends. When sensory processing, coordination or motor planning make these tasks harder than they should be, a child can look careless, clumsy or defiant when in fact their nervous system is working overtime.

At our occupational therapy clinic in Coimbatore, evaluation comes first. We measure what your child can do, identify why performance breaks down, and then build skills in a sensory gym designed to make hard work feel like play.

Signs your child may need this therapy

  • Struggles with buttons, zips, shoelaces or using a spoon independently
  • Avoids messy play, certain food textures, haircuts or nail-cutting
  • Frequently bumps into things, falls, or seems clumsy for their age
  • Tires quickly when writing, or grips a pencil awkwardly
  • Constantly on the move, or unusually low in energy and tone
  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions during daily routines

Benefits of Pediatric Occupational Therapy

  • Greater independence in dressing, feeding and toileting
  • Improved posture, core strength and endurance for seated work
  • Better attention and self-regulation in class
  • Age-appropriate hand skills for writing and cutting
  • Reduced sensory-driven meltdowns at home and in public
  • Confidence in playgrounds, sports and group activities

Treatment process

  1. STEP 1

    Detailed OT evaluation

A 60–75 minute session covering developmental history, sensory profile, muscle tone, coordination, hand skills and daily-living independence, using tools such as the Sensory Profile-2 and DASII/Peabody-based motor measures.

  2. STEP 2

    Shared goal setting

We translate findings into 3–5 functional goals that matter at home and school — holding a pencil, sitting through a meal, tolerating a haircut, buttoning a shirt.

  3. STEP 3

    Individual therapy plan

Your child receives a written plan specifying session frequency, activity progression, equipment used and the home programme that supports it.

  4. STEP 4

    Weekly play-based sessions

45-minute one-to-one sessions in our sensory gym and fine-motor studio. Activities are graded so your child is always working just beyond their comfort zone, never past it.

  5. STEP 5

    Parent training

The last 10 minutes of every session are for you: what we did, why, and the two or three things to practise before the next visit.

  6. STEP 6

    Progress review

Formal re-assessment every 12 weeks with a written report, updated goals and a discharge pathway once targets are met.
