Understanding Language Delay
Language delay affects understanding and use of words and sentences. Children may speak clearly yet be unable to build sentences, answer questions or follow classroom instructions — a difficulty that quietly undermines reading comprehension and academics.
Therapy moves systematically from vocabulary to grammar to connected narrative, in the child's home language and in English.
Signs to look for
- Short, simple sentences for their age
- Cannot follow two- or three-step instructions
- Difficulty answering who, what, where and why
- Cannot recount an event in sequence
- Frequent grammatical errors after age five
